SN74LS194AN is an integrated circuit (IC) consisting of an 8-bit universal shift register. It is an 8-bit parallel-in/parallel-out shift register which can be used for the shift or memory operations. The SN74LS194AN belongs to the Logic - Shift Registers which provide the functions of shift-right, shift-left, serial input, serial output, parallel loading, parallel transfer, and serial-in-parallel-out.The 8-bit wide data register of the SN74LS194AN is divided into two sections, each containing four flip-flops. The data register of SN74LS194AN has 3-state outputs, allowing it to be connected to other logic devices in a multiplexed fashion. The logical diagram of the SN74LS194AN is shown in the following figure.This shift register has three main inputs. The Clock input receives a TTL-level clock signal, while the Mode and Serial Input inputs control the shifting and loading of data. The outputs of the SN74LS194AN are either binary or inverted binary outputs depending on the logic level set by the Mode input.SN74LS194AN is a versatile IC used in various applications. It can be used in data entry, data registers, memory operations, and serial-to-parallel and parallel-to-serial conversions. It can be used in buffer registers, linear display control circuits, I/O expansion for microprocessor systems, and for decoding and encoding of data bits. It can also be used as an encoder for 4-to-16 line decoding and for translating four 8-bit words into a single 8-bit word. This shift register can also be used in medical, security and surveillance systems, industrial control applications, consumer electronic products, and automotive-related applications.The SN74LS194AN shift register offers two modes of operation – serial mode and parallel mode. In serial mode, the Serial Input line is used to transfer data to or from the SN74LS194AN shift register, while the Clock input is used to synchronize the transfer. In parallel mode, the Mode input is used to control the loading or transferring of data. The clock pulses are used to synchronize the data to or from the shift register.The Mode input of the SN74LS194AN can be used to select the operational modes – serial, left-shift, right-shift, and parallel loading. The Mode pin also determines which outputs are enabled and the direction of the shift action. When the Mode input is low, the shift register is in parallel load mode and the Serial Input line is ignored. When the Mode input is high, the shift register is in serial mode and the Clock input is used to determine the number of clock cycles required for the data to be loaded or shifted.The SN74LS194AN shift register is guaranteed to operate over the full military temperature range of -55°C to +125°C. It is manufactured using complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technology, which makes it highly reliable and low power consuming.
