SN74LS596N Application Field and Working Principle

SN74LS596N, or the 74LS596N Octal Latch/Shift Register, is a logic-shift register from Texas Instruments that is part of the 74LS00 series TTL Logic ICs. The 74LS596N is popular for its ability to be used for controlling 8 loads simultaneously with just 3 pins, by helping to do a parallel-in/serial-out shift register operation. The SN74LS596N is an 8-bit parallel-in/serial-out shift register that can simultaneously store and output data. It is an ideal chip used in combination with other logic chips to create complex memory/data storage/data retrieval devices.

Working Principle

The SN74LS596N 8-bit serial-in/parallel-out shift register functions by latching and storing 8-bit data words, plus 8 output enable bits. The data is latched and shifted right on a logical low-level clock pulse and can be shifted more than once by supplying additional pulses, where the serial data output (Q7) will be shifted into the serial data input (D7). This serial-in/serial-out to parallel-out arrangement is also valid when shifting left and the serial data output (Q7) will be shifted into the serial data input (D0).The SN74LS596N chip is a five-stage shift register, meaning that\'s it\'s able to store up to five bits of data and output five bits of data at once. To use it, the first five bits of data (i.e. D0-D4) must be provided to the serial data-in (SDI) input along with the clock input (SCLK). The chip then stores the data on the rising edge of the clock and outputs the data to the parallel data-out (PDO) pins.The SN74LS596N can be used as a stand-alone register, as part of a larger shift register, or as part of an 8-bit register bank. It can be operated in either parallel or serial mode, allowing designers to pick and choose the best architecture for their application. The chip also features an enable (EN) pin and an output enable (OE) pin, which are used to control the output of the register and its connection to the external circuit.
