The SN74LS697DW is a monolithic integrated circuit incorporating three registers and a programmable, presettable counter that divides one signal by any number between 2 and 15 inclusive. A wide variety of pulse coded signal dividers can be constructed using this single device. It features an asynchronous reset input and multiple output options that allow both divide-by-N, and divide-by-N-1 functions. The chip contains three registers and a presettable, divide-by-N counter. Each register consists of a 4-bit storage latch and an encoding circuit to convert the binary information in the latch to the coded signal outputs. The coded outputs of the three registers are designated Q0 through Q7, with Q0 and Q4 having the least significant binary bit of the three registers and Q1 through Q7 having the second most significant bit. The three registers, in concert with the counter, allow a wide range of signal-counting or signal-dividing operations on any single logic supply.

The counter on the SN74LS697DW uses a programmable divide-by-N technique to generate pulses at prescribed intervals. The divide-by-N counter consists of a presettable up/down counter and a programmable 5:1 multiplexer. The first stage of the counter is a presettable up/down counter, which is preloaded with the programmable divisor. Its preset input is connected to the strobe pin. The second stage is a 5:1 multiplexer which determines the actual divisor.
