Working Principle

The SN74LV4040AN counter circuit contains eight output stages with individualinhibit inputs and a common parallel-load input. When the load input is taken low, the counter is reset to zero. Each output stage of the SN74LV4040AN is capable of operating in ahigh or a low state, depending on the state of its corresponding inhibit input and the state of theprevious output stage.

When all inhibit inputs are taken low and the load input is taken high, the counter increments each time the clock input is taken low. The first output stage will increment to the high state if it is currently in the low state when the clock input is taken low. The next output stage will increment to the high state if the previous stagewas in the high state at the time the clock input is taken low. This process will repeat through all eight output stages.

When any of the inhibit inputs are taken high, the corresponding output stage willstay in the same state even if the clock input is taken low. This can be used to program the counter tocount up to a certain number, such as four or eight.

The SN74LV4040AN is also capable of being preset by taking its parallel-load inputlow before its clock input is taken low. This allows the user to preset the counter to a certain count before the counter begins its normal counting cycle.
