SN74LVC1G04DBVR Application Field and Working Principle

The SN74LVC1G04DBVR is a digital logic integrated circuit (IC) that is part of the wide family of devices along the 74LVC series. It is a single inverter gate, suitable for any kind of digital application such as telecom and audio/video equipments that require low voltage and low power consumption. This type of IC is built with two terminal inputs and one output, performing the logical operation of inverting the input signal.

The working principle of SN74LVC1G04DBVR is based on an electrically operated switch. It requires a certain energy level, usually called a logical high or logic ‘1’, to be able to operate correctly at its output terminal. When it does not receive this energy, it is said to be in the ‘off’ state, meaning logic ‘0’. This inverter gate is able to operate in very low power conditions, which are managed by the input voltage level. When both inputs are at either a high or low voltage, the output is in the same state, High or Low.However, when both inputs at the same time are low, then the output changes to high.

It could also be expected to work in the opposite way, being LOW when both inputs are high. However, this is not the default operation, as the ‘Common Input / 0 Output’ logic proposes that the output of the gate is LOW when all inputs are HIGH. Figure 1 presents a standard example of an Inverter Gate, with one input and one output. It is this configuration that is used in the SN74LVC1G04DBVR.

The SN74LVC1G04DBVR offers some interesting characteristics, such as low power supply with CMOS technology and low power schottky. It has a TTL voltage range to operate, going from 0.75 to 3.6V, when in High Logic (VCC=3V), and from 1 to 1.8V when in Low Logic (VCC=1.5V). According to this, the typical current at 3V operation is 1.8µA for a 0.2V logic. This operation is one of the most appreciated in this type of applications.

SN74LVC1G04DBVR offers both ‘Open Drain’ and ‘Totem Pole’ output types. It is constituted by a N-MOS transistor, both in input and output, with the unique exception being the output where a P-channel device can be found if the so called ‘Totem Pole’ characteristics is desired (Fig. 2).

In both cases, the output voltage is the same that is applied to VCC, when in logic ‘1’ and 0V when in logic ‘0’, even though for the ‘Open Drain’ configuration the voltage being applied in the ‘1’ state is usually lower (VOH). Moreover, the ‘Open Drain’ type presents higher and more satisfying results, concerning the leakage current.

In conclusion, the SN74LVC1G04DBVR presents a series of advantages such as low power consumption and small size, making it suitable for highly integrated circuits. Its capability to work with low voltage and logic levels, along with its TTL voltage range, is what makes it valuable in multiple application fields such as vehicle control, audio/video and telecom systems.
