SN74LVC540ADW is a low-power, wide-voltage, level-shifting buffer for low voltage digital system applications. It is a member of the Texas Instruments Logic series, categorized as a type of Logic-Buffers, Drivers, Receivers, and Transceivers. The device is available in a 5-pin SOT-23 package and is manufactured on a low-power CMOS process optimized for low voltage operation.

The SN74LVC540ADW is a unique level shifting device because of its wide supply voltage range, low power consumption, and robust performance. The device is capable of operating from a 3V to 16V supply voltage range and is powered down to an active low standby state consuming less than 0.8µA of current. The device provides an average output voltage swing of 0.8V to 3.5V when operating at a single power supply voltage. The device allows for multiple gaming or home theater systems to be easily isolated, as well as level shifting within modem systems, such as low voltage serial communications. It can also be used to shift logic levels in interfacing to asynchronous memories, such as FLASH and SRAM.

The working principle of the SN74LVC540ADW is founded on the fact that the output of the device is dependent on the input voltage. When the input voltage is at the lower end of the C-MOS power supply range (3V to 16V), the output remains low. As the input voltage approaches the upper end of the range, the output transitions from low to high. This simple logic shift is what allows the device to level shift logic levels from one voltage to another.
