The Read pointer is necessary in order to read the data stored in the FIFO without error, as well as when transferring data to and from the FIFO. It can identify the present location of the byte or word within the FIFO, as well as pointing to the next byte or word location, allowing for smooth data flow in both directions of the FIFO.
The write pointer is responsible for writing new data into the specified location of the FIFO, and can recognize when the FIFO is full or empty. It will either overwrite existing data in the FIFO, or if it is empty will write data into the FIFO from an external source.
The SN74V293PZAEP allows for both parallel and serial data to be stored in the FIFO. Data is written into the FIFO using either a parallel write port, or a serial write port. The parallel write port receives 8-bit words and requires four Clock cycles to be written to the register. The serial write port allows for data to be written in oneClock cycle but it has a reduced data width of 4-bits.
This device was designed to prevent the occurrence of “tearing” or “missing bytes” from appearing in the FIFO, a phenomenon that explains why bytes can be lost or skipped during the data transfer process. The SN74V293PZAEP eliminates the tearing effect by having a dual-port D-type register, one for input and the other for output. This dual port capability guarantees that every byte is read out, even if the incoming ones are skipping over it.
