The SP6650EU-L/TR belong to the family of DC DC Switching Regulators in the Voltage Regulators category of PMICs. Designed to provide a regulated output voltage and can be used to convert input voltages to other voltages as well. This application field and working principle is applicable in a plethora of consumer electronics, which are in need of a regulated, but also efficient power-supply solution.
The underlying working principle of this type of DC-DC Converter is based on pulse-width modulation (PWM). In essence, the input DC voltage is chopped at a certain speed, with a certain “on” and “off” ratio. The output, which is set to a certain level, is then maintained and regulated by, in effect, a constant average voltage across all switching cycles. The output voltage can be regulated, even when the input voltage varies, as the voltage regulator adjusts the “on” and “off” ratio of the pulses.
The SP6650EU-L/TR is especially suitable for non-isolated, the isolated, and dual-isolated DC/DC application fields, such as in automotive electronics, or renewable energy applications. Automotive electronic equipment is increasingly demanding, requiring advanced voltage regulation, along with high efficiency and superior noise performance, and the SP6650EU-L/TR can answer these demands. It is a nanoWatt Power Saving DC/DC Converter, able to operate with a load current down to nanoamperes, making it perfect for battery-powered, low power applications – e.g. in wearable devices.
To guarantee small open-loop output voltage deviation and high load regulation, the device has a two-stage control architecture. It should be noted, however, that the SP6650EU-L/TR is a synchronous buck converter, and the output voltage will always be lower than the input voltage.
The switching frequency of the device is preset at 1.5 MHz, but can be adjusted with an external resistor, thus eliminating the need for an external clock and improving efficiency – especially for higher currents. The maximum output current is 6A and the maximum efficiency peaks at 97%.
Safety is also guaranteed as the device is protected against short circuit, over current protection, and thermal shutdown. Furthermore, due to its PWM operation, the SP6650EU-L/TR can also provide switch transient suppression, meaning that it can protect the transformer core during switch-on and switch-off, by means of its inherently soft-start properties.
The SP6650EU-L/TR is therefore suitable in a vast number of application fields, and can be considered one of the better solutions for efficient, reliable, and safe power regulation, especially in automotive and renewable energy fields.
