SPX1117M3-L is part of a family of low dropout (LDO) linear voltage regulators used in a variety of mobile, computing and consumer applications. It is designed to offer high output current, low quiescent current and low dropout voltage, in a single package. This device provides space-saving, reliable and efficient power for applications requiring low supply voltages.
The SPX1117M3-L operates from 1.22 V to 6 V input voltage and delivers output current up to 1 A. It features programmable over-current protection – when the current limit is exceeded, the current limit comparator will shut down the device (either in short-circuit or fault condition). Other features include thermal shutdown protection, power good output and adjustable output voltage with 0.3% line and load regulation accuracy.
In addition to its low dropout voltage and high output current, the SPX1117M3-L also offers excellent power efficiency of up to 97.7%. This feature makes it ideal for use in applications where power conversion efficiency is important – such as battery-powered mobile devices and computing systems.
The working principle behind the SPX1117M3-L is based on the fact that a change in the input current (from a given input voltage) leads to a change in the output voltage. To accomplish this, the control circuit of the device consists of a sensing transistor Q1, a regulator Q2, an error amplifier and a voltage reference.
Q1 is used to sense the voltage between the output and the reference voltage, and it drives the regulator Q2 accordingly. When the output voltage needs to be adjusted, Q2 will adjust the current and changes the output voltage. The error amplifier in the circuit is used to compare the sensed voltage with the reference voltage and to provide feedback to the regulator Q2 to keep the output voltage within the specified range.
The SPX1117M3-L can be used in a variety of applications such as computing, consumer and mobile devices, as well as automotive and industrial equipment. Its wide range of input voltages and its wide output adjustment range make it particularly suitable for applications requiring adjustable output voltage.
