The SPX29502T5-L Integrated Linear Regulator Voltage Module (LMU) is a highly efficient and durable digital linear regulator, which is widely used in modern power supply applications. Working Principle

The LMU is based on a variable frequency pulse width modulation (PWM) topology which operates at a regulated frequency (typically 300kHz). An internal error amplifier compares the reference voltage to the feedback voltage and amplifies the difference between the two. The output of the error amplifier is sent to a PWM comparator, which then produces a rectangular pulse at a frequency and duty cycle that is proportional to the error voltage. This error voltage is then used to adjust and control the output voltage regulator.

The output of the LMU is connected to an inductor and a diode, and then to the output filter capacitor. When the LMU output rises above the desired set point, the error amplifier sends a signal to the PWM comparator, and the corresponding rectangular pulse shortens the on-time of the LMU output. On the other hand, the output voltage will be increased when the error voltage is below the set point, thus extending the on-time duration. The filtering effect of the inductor and diode combination allows the LMU output to reach the desired set point faster than when operated in a linear regulation mode.
