The current passing through the device increases until it reaches the hold current and the SCR remains in on-state. The current continues until the voltage across the SCR reaches its breakdown voltage, at which point the SCR switches off and the current flow is interrupted.The four diodes are used to protect the SCRs from overvoltage and reverse voltage. The overvoltage protection diode prevents the SCR from turning on when a voltage higher than its rating is applied.
