Magnetic sensors, often described as switches, are sensors that detect the presence of magnetic fields, and are frequently used to detect the presence of static or low-frequency magnetic fields. Solid-state (SS) magnetic sensors are the most common type of magnetic sensor, and the SS552MT is one of the most widely used models.
The SS552MT is a miniature, lensed, hole-through solid-state switch, purpose-built for minimum size and weight applications. Despite its small size, it offers replaceable, custom-built lenses for full flexibility in the field. It is available in two versions: SPST (Single Pole Single Throw), and SPDT (Single Pole Dual Throw).
The SS552MT magnetic sensor is suitable for a wide range of applications, from hand-held device attach buttons, to automotive door handles, to industrial floor machinery. The magnetic field need only pass through the inductor, thereby eliminating the need for physical contact. The minimal power consumption and reliable long-term operation of the switch make it a natural fit for many low-power applications.
The SS552MT utilizes the LAMBDA principle, which is also known as the Hall effect. This principle states that when a magnetic field is passed through a conducting material, a small current is generated, which is proportional to the strength of the magnetic field. This principle is used in the SS552MT to detect the presence of magnetic fields, and to either open or close the switch.
When the switch is in its default, open-state position, it is at a low voltage with a high current flow. When the switch is exposed to a magnetic field, the voltage rises, and the current flow drops. The switch is rated for a minimum of 20 mA, so if the voltage drops below this threshold, the switch will close, completing the circuit and allowing current to flow.
Magnetic fields can also be used to open and close the switch. When the switch is exposed to a stronger magnetic field, the voltage will drop, and the current flow will increase. When the voltage drops below a certain threshold, the switch will open, interrupting the flow of current.
The SS552MT magnetic switch is a rugged, reliable, and affordable device suitable for a wide variety of applications. Its small size, low power consumption, and long-term reliable operation make it a desirable choice for many applications, and its replaceable, custom lenses allow for full flexibility in the field.
