PMIC (Power Management IC) refers to an integrated circuit (IC) dedicated to realising efficient power management functions. It can adjust the voltage and current of different power sources, source and provide various power supply conditions and add various protection functions in order to ensure that the electronic equipment works properly. ST1L02PU33R is a 3A low voltage linear voltage regulator specially developed for low voltage applications with input voltage of 2.5V-5.5V, adjustable output voltage of 0.8V-5V, supply current up to 3A, low quiescent current of 30μA and very low dropout voltage of 300mV at 3A load.

Working Principle of ST1L02PU33R
The basic principle of operation of the ST1L02PU33R is similar to that of other linear-type regulators. Its output voltage is produced by using a pass transistor to control the potential of a suitable reference voltage. Whenever the switch transistor is on, it acts as a variable resistor to control the voltage of its output terminal. The basic operating principle of ST1L02PU33R is simple and intuitive.
In this linear regulator, an accurate reference voltage is supplied to the voltage regulator. Comparator compares the set voltage and output voltage. The output voltage of the comparator goes low when the output voltage is higher than the set voltage, resulting in the current flowing into the base of the power MOSFET. This will reduce the output voltage. The output voltage of the comparator goes high when the output voltage is lower than the set voltage and the current will be pulled from the base of the power MOSFET. This will increase the output voltage. Therefore, in the steady state, the comparator has a balanced high and low output voltage which maintains a constant output voltage.
Linear voltage regulators are typically able to regulate the output voltage in a range of 0.5V to around 8V. They have the advantage of low noise and low cost. For low noise, the impressed current and output current signal noise components must be small. Compared with other types of voltage regulators, linear voltage regulators will have a power dissipation due to the voltage drop across the pass element, which is the reason why they are unsuitable for applications requiring high currents. The addition of the ST1L02PU33R enables lower voltage drop, which makes it suitable for low voltage and high current applications, and increases efficiency.
The ST1L02PU33R is an ideal device for realizing low voltage and high current voltage regulation by its SSOP8 package and low dropout voltage.
