Thyristors are often used as solid-state switches that do the same kind of job as mechanical relays and contactors. They have a high switching power capability and can act as current or voltage regulators. As such, thyristors are often used in high-load switching applications such as motorcycle and automobile starters, power supplies, and power control systems. ST36B (Silicon Controlled Rectifier or SBR) is a three-terminal, semi-conducting component that forms an important component of these thyristors. It is a high-speed, medium-powered electronic component that functions as an electronic switch.

ST36B can be used for a variety of tasks and applications. In motor control circuits, it acts as a motor starter or a motor safety switch. In AC voltage regulators, it acts as an element capable of regulating AC voltage levels in electronic devices. DIACs (Diode Alternating Current) and SIDACs (Silicon Controlled Alternating Current) are two other semi-conducting switch types of the thyristor family. DIACs typically consist of two terminals arranged back to back; SIDACs, on the other hand, have four terminals and are somewhat similar to TRIACs in their construction and operation.

The DIAC is a two-terminal switch that turns abruptly from low resistance to high resistance when a predetermined voltage level is reached. When this given voltage is reached, the DIAC will switch to its high-resistance state, thereby interrupting the current flowing through it. This interruption can be used to provide precise control over the switching of the devices connected in a circuit. DIACs are usually found in motor control circuits, temperature and pressure switches, and capacitor discharge units.

SIDACs are similar to DIACs except that they are Symmetrically Interruptive DIACs that show a symmetrical switching behavior when subjected to a given voltage level. SIDACs are used for controlling alternating currents and can be used in circuits that require precise control. In addition, these devices can be used as loads in regulated power supplies such as DC-DC converters and LED drivers, where precise regulation of voltage levels is a requirement.

Thyristors are important components in many electrical and electronic systems. ST36B, DIAC, and SIDAC are three of the major types of thyristors. They all have the same basic function, which is to provide solid-state switching of electrical currents in circuits.
