Trimmer Potentiometers

The ST42ETA103 is part of a larger family of trimmer potentiometers, also called trimmers. These trimmers are primarily used to adjust the sensing of an electrical signal in an electronic circuit. In particular, the ST42ETA103 trimmer has the capability to adjust the sensitivity of a signal in either the left-right direction, or the up-down direction.

Trimmer potentiometers are often used with an associated circuit such as the ST42ETA103. The ST42ETA103 is specifically designed to adjust the sensing of an electrical signal in the left-right direction. This type of trimmer can be used in a variety of applications, such as model train controllers, audio system equalizers, and adjustable PWM output controllers. Generally, this trimmer is used to adjust the voltage signal from a sensor in order to gain a desired control level signal.

The ST42ETA103 trimmer consists of a potentiometer with a series of contacts and three terminals, usually referred to as the wipers, finger plates, or wafer. It has an adjustment range of up to ± 4200 mV. The two outer wipers are used to adjust the sensitivity of the electrical signal. When the pot is rotated in one direction, the outer wipers move in and out, thus changing the voltage on the sensing wire. The center wiper is used for the internal zero adjustment. The two outer wipers of the ST42ETA103 can be adjusted independently as well. The upper wiper can be adjusted to adjust the left-right element of the electrical signal, while the lower wiper is used to adjust the up-down element. This provides a greater degree of precision when adjusting the signal magnitude. The upper and lower wiper can also be adjusted independently to adjust the voltage in different steps.
