Trimmer Potentiometers play an important role in varied applications where precision adjustments of voltage, current and resistance is required. ST7ETA502, is a three-terminal N-channel, bidirectional, non-isolated, high voltage, small signal MOSFET trimmer potentiometer. The device is specifically designed for use in switching mode power supplies, switch adjust, CRT intensity controls, laser diode conditioning, adjustable current sources, and adjustable current loops.
The ST7ETA502 consists of three terminals: gate, drain and source. The gate terminal is electrically-isolated from both the source and drain. When a positive voltage is applied to the gate at the same time a positive voltage is applied to the source, the drain is biased to approximately a negative voltage with respect to the source and drain. This biased drain voltage is referred to as the reverse bias drain which is adjustable with the gate voltage. When the reverse bias is varied, the drain current will vary as well.
The ST7ETA502 works by controlling the flow of current flowing from the drain to the source. When a positive voltage is applied to the gate and the negative voltage is applied to the source, a reverse bias is established between the drain and the source. This creates a reverse bias field effect that affects the current flow through the channel between the drain and the source. By controlling the gate bias, the magnitude of the reverse bias field effect can be adjusted and the drain current can be regulated.
The ST7ETA502 is used in a variety of applications requiring precise settings of resistance, current or voltage. In switching mode power supplies, the device is used to regulate the current flow from the output of the main power supply to the load. In adjustable current sources and adjustable current loops, the device is used to adjust the current level to provide a precise current to the load. In CRT intensity controls, the device is used to adjust the level of current to the electron gun of the cathode ray tube. In laser diode conditioning, the device is used to adjust the bias current between the laser diode and the corresponding photodiode.
