PMIC - LED Drivers: STCS1PUR Application Field and Working Principle

Light emitting diode (LED) is a type of semiconductor that emits light when a current passes through it. LEDs are commonly used for control and indication purposes, for instance as indicators in electronic devices and signalling devices. LEDs become increasingly popular for illuminative purposes, as it is energy-efficient, produces higher quality light compared to incandescent bulbs and has a long service life. When designing LED applications, power management integrated circuits (PMICs) are widely used to satisfy the LED illumination driver needs. Stetron Inc. designs LED drivers such as the STCS1PUR, an intelligent LED driver that features an advanced current controller, advanced safety features and adjustable switching frequency. This type of LED driver fulfils its design mandates during the design of complex LED lighting systems.

Application Field

The advanced feature set of the STCS1PUR allows it to be used in many professional lighting applications. Most notably, it is applicable in the automotive industry to drive high power LEDs in high-end headlights, taillights and other operational lighting. Additionally, the STCS1PUR is designed to meet high reliability and safety standards required for potential lighting applications in the industrial, aerospace and building automation industries. Its ability to control and monitor current conditions, as well as its capability to manage high power is also a great advantage in camera applications, as it can be used to drive high loads such as flashlights or iris adjusters. Furthermore, LED lighting applications, especially the ones operating outdoor, require a driver that is highly efficient and able to withstand extreme environmental conditions. The STCS1PUR’s fine current regulation, safe hot-swap capabilities and under-voltage lockout make it an ideal driver for outdoor public and private illumination systems, especially in weatherproof and seafaring applications, enabling light strings of different lengths to have consistent illumination.

Working Principle

This LED driver utilizes self-oscillating interleaving technology and is capable of managing up to 1 Watt output. It combines a linear regulator with a MOSFET switch in the same package, thus eliminating the need for an external power MOSFET. The STCS1PUR is embedded with Pulse Width Modulation that allows it to adjust the brightness of the LED according to the requirement of the application, thereby contributing to its energy-efficient design. The STCS1PUR also incorporates an advanced current controller and under-voltage lockout circuit that provides high-level accuracy of the output current without compromising stability and control. The secondary voltage variation caused by the load is cancelled out by the LDO circuit, and the current monitoring circuit translates this into the corresponding output current. The internal comparator will detect any outputs higher than the maximum operational current and disable the device, thus protecting it from excessive loading. The output current of the STCS1PUR can be adjusted according to the needs of the application. This can be achieved via two pairs of typical settings, one for high current and the other for low current. During the high current setting, the PWM duty cycle is set at 90%, while during the low current setting the duty cycle is adjusted to 5%.

Conclusion

The STCS1PUR LED driver is well-suited for applications requiring a stable and energy-efficient LED illumination. Its above-mentioned features make it an ideal LED driver for outdoor public and private illumination systems operating in tough weather conditions. Furthermore, its adjustable current control and under-voltage lockout features make it a viable option for the automotive, industrial, aerospace and building automation industries.
