The STGAP2DM is part of the STGAP family of gate drivers, a type of isolator designed to provide protected and reliable power for high-voltage switching on the most demanding applications. It is the only gate driver to employ two-level antiparallel MOSFETS, which in combination with the patented driver allows for robust operation in applications with large amounts of electrical noise or very high switching frequencies.
The STGAP2DM is especially suitable for applications at high-voltage, where the gate-to-source voltage may exceed 1200 V, or in applications where very low supply voltage is required. It offers an integrated two-level protection guarding against over-voltage, over-current, and short-circuit conditions. Natural thermal shutdown is also employed to prevent the device from over-heating.
The STGAP2DM supports two general operation modes - Active and Non-Active - as well as a set of configurable operating parameters, allowing the module to be tailored to the application requirements. In Active mode, the device continuously monitors the status of the MOSFET gate and applies a voltage to control the MOSFET’s switching. The Non-Active mode is designed for applications which do not require continuous active control over the MOSFET switching.
The STGAP2DM works by sensing the voltage on its gate and adjusting the voltage applied to the MOSFET gate accordingly. This is done by calculating the difference between the desired voltage and the actual one and then applying the right amount of voltage to compensate for the discrepancy. This voltage is then supplied to the MOSFET gate, controlling the MOSFET’s switching. Furthermore, the device also offers thermal protection, by shutting down the device in case of thermal overload.
