Isolators - Gate Drivers: STGAP2SCM Application Field and Working Principle

The STGAP2SCM is an isolating gate driver, produced by STMicroelectronics, designed for industrial application fields and used to control switching devices such as thyristors, TRIACs, relays and other high voltage and high power devices. This device consists of a galvanically isolated high voltage side, an open-drain low voltage side, and two level shifter channels.The high voltage side of STGAP2SCM is powered by isolated DC voltage of up to 1100V (different from the low voltage supply voltage) and provides isolated voltage level shifting from this DC voltage to the low voltage side. On the low voltage side, the output is open-drain type and has low saturation voltage. The low voltage side of STGAP2SCM is powered by an isolated DC voltage of between 3.3V and 5V.The main purpose of the STGAP2SCM is to provide galvanic isolation and level shifting capability to the low voltage side of the power circuit. This ensures higher reliability and better performance, as the isolator chip acts as a buffer between the high voltage and low voltage sides. It also minimizes the power loss on the output side, and prevents electrical noise and high transient voltages from entering the high voltage side of the circuit.The STGAP2SCM also helps to reduce the number of components required in the power system. By providing the necessary level shifting capability, the isolator reduces the need for multiple voltage supplies or resistors. The device also reduces the number of parts needed to switch the device on/off as just two switches are required to control a single device, instead of the multiple switches used in conventional methods.STGAP2SCM’s working principle is based on the use of gate driver. The output of the driver is an open drain type, meaning that the controlled load gets either high or low output depending on the voltage of the gate driver’s input.The DC input voltage on the high side of the STGAP2SCM is converted into an alternate current (AC) and is applied to the primary of the isolator transformer, which in turn generates an AC signal on its secondary side.
