The STMPE801MTR I/O expander is designed to increase the capabilities of existing in-circuit serial interfaces like I2C and SPI (Serial Peripheral Interface) in embedded systems. It provides 8 GPIO pins that can be used to interface with digital / analog peripherals like buttons and sensors, allowing engineers to simplify their designs by reducing the need for additional I2C or SPI devices. The I/O expander supports up to four I2C masters, which can be used to operate two GPIO ports and two UARTs (Universal Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitter).

The STMPE801MTR I/O expander is based on a STMicroelectronics ARM Cortex-M0 MCU (Microcontroller Unit). It features an internal memory of up to 256 bytes, multiplexed I/O lines and an embedded system-on-chip (SoC) with an I2C/SPI/Inter-Integrated Circuit (I2C) interface.
