Transistors - Bipolar (BJT) - Single
The STSA851-AP, or commonly known as a single transistors-bipolar-junction-transistors (BJT), is a device used for switching and amplifying one electrical signal to another. It is composed of three terminals, namely the base, collector and emitter. The base is the control device, the collector is the output, and the emitter is the input. In order to have this device functioning, the base-emitter must be forward biased while the collector-emitter is reverse biased. This means that the base terminal requires more voltage than the emitter terminal.
Once voltage is applied, the STSA851-AP works by allowing current to flow between the emitter and collector terminals (hence it is a current controlled device). This current works by collecting the electrons emitted by the emitter, and then amplified across the collector. Through this, we are able to regulate and increase the current as needed. As it is common in most BJT transistors, the current gain, or commonly known as beta, can be increased by the application of a larger voltage across the base-emitter junction.
Being a medium-power BJT transistor, the STSA851-AP is widely used in applications such as switching, amplifying and saturating of signal levels. It has excellent frequency response within its class, and is usually specified to a maximum current gain of 900. Being a compact and low-cost device, it is often chosen as an optimal choice in applications where higher power is not necessary. Examples of these include pulse-amplification, DC-DC conversion and signal conditioning.
The STSA851-AP also exhibits two other useful properties. It has a temperature tracking system where its current gain is sustain even with varying temperature. It also possess an ESD protection feature, where its design prevents it from registering current when it is exposed to environment noise.
When looking at BJT transistors, the STSA851-AP is a go-to choice for those who are looking for a low-cost, medium to high power, and reliable transistor. Although its power output may be low compared to other transistors, its frequency response and temperature tracking features make up for it.
