STTH10R04FP Application Field and Working Principle

The STTH10R04FP is a state-of-the-art Fast Recovery Diode that combines excellent forward conduction, reverse recovery and EMI performance. It is specifically designed and optimized for Power Factor Correction (PFC) circuits in medium-and high-power AC-DC converters for desktop, laptop, telecom and server applications. The advantages of the STTH10R04FP are the higher efficiency operation, smaller component size and lower system cost.

Application fields

The STTH10R04FP is suitable for PFC flyback and boost converters, with a wide input range of up to 500 W, when used in combination with a medium-frequency TEA1710L control IC. It can also be used in synchronous buck topologies, when a turboDC converter is required in applications such as laptop and server adapters. Additionally, the STTH10R04FP can be used in isolated PFC converter applications, such as telecom rectifiers and other applications, where lower current stresses and higher efficiency are required.

Working principle

The STTH10R04FP works in a very similar way to all rectifier diodes. When the positive input voltage increases beyond the forward voltage drop, measured in the STTH10R04FP as a 5 V typical, the junction allows current to flow from the anode to the cathode and the diode is said to be forward-biased. Conversely, current will not flow from the cathode to the anode until the measured reverse voltage is greater than the breakdown voltage of the diode.

The key feature of the STTH10R04FP is its very low reverse recovery time of less than 10 ns. This is necessary in order to minimize PFC ripple, ensuring the system operates at higher efficiency and improves the reliability of components. This also ensures that the device works well in environments with high EMI susceptibility levels.

The STTH10R04FP has a low leakage current which results in lower power dissipation at light loads. It is also highly reliable and protected against Electro-Static Discharge (ESD) with its built-in diode. Additionally, it has low switching losses, which enables higher system efficiency and a small footprint. As a result, it is highly suitable for applications in handsets, game consoles and set-top boxes.
