RF Transceiver ICs have been heavily employed in wireless communication networks owing to the development of radio technology in recent years. As a type of integrated circuit, the SX1277IMLTRT, released by Semtech in 2020, is a perfect example of it. With the design, it enjoys a compact size, has highly integrated functions, and can provide high performance with few external components. In this article, it will be discussed about the application field and working principle of SX1277IMLTRT.

Generally speaking, with strong functions and extreme low current consumption, the SX1277IMLTRT is suitable for radio transceiver in the fields of various short-distance applications, such as a home automation application, security tracking system, remote control system and RFID system. It is also suitable for low-cost, low-data rate, ultralow power wireless module designing.

Specifically, SX1277IMLTRT contains a power amplifier, low noise amplifier, transmitting and receiving switching circuits, reference voltage generating circuit, image rejection circuit, frequency synthesizer, RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indication) circuit, channel filter, data stream processing circuitry, bit synchronizer and other circuitries. All of these integrated circuits are connected together to form the circuit in Figure 1 (omitted here due to limit in space).

Meanwhile, SX1277IMLTRT also embodies advanced high performance LoRa technology. It uses direct sequencing spread spectrum modulation to perform wireless communication, and the power amplifier integrated in it enhances the bandwidth and radio reach of the transmission, while the channel filter prevents interference and ensures it has the ability to receive signals while in sleep mode. Therefore, it can realize a wide range of receiving and transmitting frequency, high counter interference and good anti-interference performance.

In addition, SX1277IMLTRT also supports the popular FSK voicing mode and GFSK data mode. For the FSK voicing mode, its modulation index is relatively small, which is conducive to energy saving and power saving in the transmitting process. For the GFSK data mode, its modulation index can be relatively large, allowing it to receive weak signals, thus becoming applicable to applications, such as remote reading and metering.

Despite its great transmission capability, the SX1277IMLTRT still contains other useful features needed for wireless communication. For example, its Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS) technique helps it to achieve super-long-distance transmission, while its two TX/RX address filters allow for simplifying the network configuration. Also, it is optimized in terms of optimized current consumption to enhance the battery life of the wireless device.

At last, the SX1277IMLTRT also supports data transmission protocol, allowing it to effectively carry out the transmitting and receiving of data packets in order to realize the wireless communication. This wireless data transmission protocol can be divided into four parts: Message Format, Data Security Encapsulation, Frequency Hopping Spreading and Modem Setting. All these four parts function together to complete the data transmission procedure.

In conclusion, the SX1277IMLTRT offers great performance in various low-power, short-distance wireless communication applications in terms of low power consumption and high transmission capability.
