TVS – Thyristors

Thyristors, or static uncontrolled rectifiers, are a form of switching device used in a variety of applications, most commonly voltage control. Devices like thyristors can be used to switch large amounts of power quickly and are a popular replacement for normal mechanical relays, which can become slow after multiple switching cycles. As such, thyristors have a large variety of applications in realms as diverse as production line automation and home appliances.

T10A100 Application Field and Working Principle

The T10A100 is a voltage controlled thyristor (VCT) manufactured by Vishay Semiconductors. It is a medium power 1000V 10A thyristor and has a wide range of applications due to its robust construction and good electrical characteristics. It has a wide operational temperature range of -40°C to +130°C, which makes it suitable for use in industrial applications and in harsh environments.

The T10A100 is an asymmetrical VCT which requires only two current bipolar gate pulses of approximately 10V to trigger the thyristor. Once triggered, the thyristor continuously conducts until the current through it falls below a certain level. This allows for bidirectional switch control, however it requires two separate thyristors if both directions are required. This also allows for very fast switching and minimal capacitance change.

The T10A100 is ideal for use as a low-noise rectifier in applications such as TV tuners, computers, peripherals, microwaves, and home audio systems. Also, the thyristor is able to function as a load switch or a crowbar protection device in industrial control circuits, like inverters and motor drives, and can be used for temperature measurement applications as well. Furthermore, it is usable in drive circuits for a variety of general purpose power switches, such as ac relays.
