TVS – Thyristors

Thyristors are a class of semiconductor switching devices, used mostly for power regulation and control applications. The T10A240 is a 600 V IC MOSFET Transient Voltage Suppression (TVS) Diode, in a 5-lead SOT-323 surface mount package type. This thyristor is primarily used for circuit over-voltage protection and is designed to safely absorb and dissipate voltage transients and reduce EMI. It works by blocking the voltage surge and limiting the surge current so the circuit is not damaged.

T10A240 Application Field and Working Principle

The T10A240 is an invaluable component in various applications requiring voltage transient suppression, absorptance and dissipation.

The T10A240 is commonly used in transient protection circuits, such as those used in consumer electronics, automotive electronics, telecom, medical equipment, industrial applications and many more. These devices have an ion-implanted region and are designed to absorb voltage transients and reduce electromagnetic interference (EMI). To do this, the thyristor absorbs and dissipates the transient voltage, clamping the peak voltage to a safe level throughout the circuit. These devices can also protect sensitive components from voltage transients, as well as providing EMC filtering for data cables. It is worth noting that this device can also be used in applications which require less than 600 V, as the T10A240 still provides superior performance.

The T10A240 is driven off the same type of thyristor gate and is typified by an almost zero voltage trigger current and a breakover voltage. The breakover occurs at the voltage at which the fluctuation occurs and the trigger current reduces as the voltage drops. The internal components are arranged such that the device turns into a low resistance during the alternate phase and at the same time, the junction voltage is raised, allowing current flow into the device.

The T10A240 is also relatively simple in terms of its functionality; the P-type gate-controlled thyristor (GCT) operates in two modes, breakover and switching, depending on what the voltage is like. If the voltage exceeds a predetermined value, which is the breakover voltage, the diode turns on and the current starts to flow, which reduces the input voltage. If the voltage falls below this value, the diode will turn off and the current will not flow. This on/off behavior is extremely useful in applications which require overvoltage protection and EMC filtering.

In conclusion, the T10A240 is specifically designed for over-voltage transition protection, EMC filtering and EMI reduction and is a reliable component for all these applications. It is a low-cost, efficient and user-friendly device, which can be integrated into many circuits.
