T1635T-8T

Thyristors or TRIACs are a form of solid state switching device used to control the flow of electrical power. The T1635T-8T is a TRIAC designed for low current (0.7A) AC or DC loads and is suitable for both industrial and commercial applications. The T1635T-8T is a quadrant thyristor meaning that it has four symmetrical quadrants – two for conducting and two for blocking. It has two power junctions (two opposite junctions) and two control terminals with a trigger current range from 2mA to 20mA.

In terms of construction, the T1635T-8T is a planar, three terminal device with copper plated bonding pads. It is made up of a layer of N-type and P-type semiconductor material in a flat configuration, creating four distinct terminals – a Gate, Main Anode and Main Cathode, and Acetone-proof Base. The Gate is used to control the current flow, and is connected to a suitable driving circuit. The Main Anode and Cathode are used to separate load currents of opposite polarities.

In terms of its operation, the T1635T-8T’s main feature is that it is capable of bidirectional control with two insulated leads, allowing for switching of both AC and DC loads. The Gate voltage serves as the trigger voltage to enable the MIAC and at the same time, prevents it from turning on inadvertently due to leakage currents. When the Gate voltage exceeds its minimum trigger level, a low current passes across the Gate and Main Anode, which in turn causes a very small current to flow through the main cathode. This small current allows the TRIAC to switch on, thereby controlling the flow of electrical current in either direction.

The T1635T-8T is commonly used in digital circuitry. It allows designers to make logic signals switch digital devices with AC as well as DC circuits. Due to its low power dissipation and low turn-on time, the T1635T-8T is also suitable for applications where quick response times and high current control accuracy is required. It is also used in light dimmers, motor speed controls, temperature controls, power controls, and switch-mode power supplies.

Its operation is based upon the triggering of a low current through the Gate junction which then allows the TRIAC to switch on and control the flow of electrical current in either direction.
