Thyristors - TRIACsThe TRIAC, a three-terminal alternating current (AC) semiconductor switch, is widely employed in the home, industry and commercial sectors for a variety of applications. The TRIAC was invented by George H. Haxel and Carl W. Zollman after their pioneering work in 1937. Through the TRIAC, it is possible to switch either alternating or pulsating dc current, enabling it to be used as a very effective control device to regulate ac voltage. The TRIAC is classified as an thyristor, the generic name given to ac controlled switches.The TRIAC is practical in applications where larger current ratings are necessary, such as in the controlling of lighting, heating, power supplies, and motor speed. It is sometimes used as a switch in domestic appliances, sometimes as a regulator, and even more as an output device that switches off/on power in various appliances.The T2322BG is a four-pin, bidirectional thyristor that can be used for controlling dc and ac power. It is typically used in applications from residential to commercial, where it can be used to control the speed of motors, power supplies, packaging machines, and security systems. It is also useful for controlling heaters, resistors, and furnaces.The T2322BG is an ideal solution for controlling power in any AC or DC circuit, such as controlling the speed of AC induction motors and controlling illumination systems. The T2322BG features a high peak off-state voltage and a low triggering current. This makes it suitable for applications with relatively large voltage/current requirements.The T2322BG works by using its four terminals, the anode, the cathode, and two gate terminals. The diode is placed close to the Triac and is connected with the same polarity as the main circuit. When the Triac switches off, the voltage across the inductive load raises causing a current to flow through the diode. This effectively dissipates the excess energy created by the inductor, thereby allowing the Triac to switch off without arcing or sparking.In summary, the T2322BG is a very effective control device for AC and DC applications, providing precise control over the current and voltage. The spark-quenching diode allows the T2322BG to switch off without risk of arcing or sparking.
