Working Principle
Tantalum Polymer Capacitors are constructed with a tantalum anode and a conductive or non-conductive polymer cathode. This special capacitor structure creates a very efficient capacitance with superior volumetric efficiency.
The cathode is usually composed of a PVDF-HFP electroactive polymer as the solid electrolyte, a carbon-filled gel to form the cathode plate. The polymer is pressed on the foil side of the tantalum dielectric anode, and then a preformed foil is attached to the anode.
When the capacitor is charged, positive ions in the polymer move to the anode, while negative ions in the polymer move to the cathode. This creates an electrostatic field in the dielectric spacer, allowing the capacitor to store energy. When the capacitor is discharged, the ions quickly flow back, resulting in a low energy loss.
Basically, these capacitor is composed of an anode, a dielectric spacer and a cathode, and works like a battery. It stores electrical energy, and when there is a power flow, the capacitor will supply the stored energy and help to maintain the reference voltage.
