Tantalum Capacitors

Tantalum capacitors are electrolytic capacitors providing highly stable capacitance. It uses the combination of tantalum metal powder and a dielectric oxide, usually tantalum pentoxide, to store an electrical charge within an insulated foil construction. This type of capacitor is particularly useful due to the fact that levels of capacitance remain relatively stable over time, even when operating in environments with high temperatures. When connected in an external circuit, these polarized electrons are able to move freely within the capacitor and contribute to the capacitance of the device. When current flows through the capacitor, electrons flow through the anode and an equivalent number of electrons are entrapped within the dielectric layer. This forms a large accumulation of charge within the dielectric, which contributes to the capacitance of the device. When current rises and falls, the charge stored within the dielectric is also able to oscillate and cause a negative capacitance balance, resulting in a decrease in the total capacitance of the device.
