Tantalum capacitors, also known as tantalum electrolytic capacitors, are electrolytic capacitors constructed with tantalum metal as an anode, covered by a dielectric oxide film, and embedded in an electrolyte made of a mixture of ethylene glycol, water, and boric acid. Using the properties of the oxide film, these capacitors offer a combination of low leakage, long life, and high capacitance compared to other kinds of capacitors like aluminum electrolytic capacitors.The core of the tantalum capacitor is composed of three segments. The anode, which is made of tantalum metal, is coated with a two-layer dielectric oxide film. The outer and inner layers serve as the insulating material that separates the anode from the other two segments. The outer layer is usually composed of ruthenium dioxide (RuO2) and the inner layer of titanium dioxide (TiO2).
