The working principle behind a Tantalum capacitor is quite straightforward. When a voltage is applied across the device’s two electrodes, an electric current flows through the liquid electrolyte, which is located within the sealed outer container known as the anode. This electrolyte is responsible for creating an electrical field that is attracted to the anode’s positively charged regions, while also being repelled from the anode’s negatively charged regions. This creates a charge imbalance, which results in stored electrical energy.

The capacitance of a tantalum capacitor is a function of the amount of charge on the anode which, in turn, is determined by the size of the capacitor and the applied voltage. As the voltage increases, so does the capacitance. When the voltage is removed, the charge on the anode is slowly discharged back through the electrolyte, which results in a gradual decrease in the capacitance.
