The TAP155K025SRW is a small, surface mount, axial-lead tantalum capacitor consisting of a sintered tantalum anode, dielectric solid electrolyte, and a cathode made of a lightly doped manganese dioxide. This capacitor is particularly useful in its "low profile SMT" version, as its height is just 1.25mm. Alongside this, its very low leakage (in the order of pico-amps) and relatively low impedance make it ideal in applications requiring a stable voltage supply.
The capacitor is designed for ease of use and automated assembly processes — it is available as taping and in tape & reel packaging. This makes the TAP155K025SRW suitable for digital, analog and mixed signal applications, such as motor control, logic ICs, interface ICs, cellular phones and modems.
Working Principle of the TAP 155K025SRW
The TAP 155K025SRW employs tantalum as the anode — the positive terminal — and uses MnO2 powder for the cathode — the negative terminal — as a solid electrolyte. The tantalum element can also have a form of surface treatment applied such as tantalum-pentoxide (Ta2O5).
The tantalum is electrolytically charged in a process called activation; this is made possible by the electrochemical reaction between the anode, which is a form of tantalum metal and the electrolyte, which is manganese dioxide. This reaction creates an electric field, containing many negative and positive ions. The electric field will store the electrical charge.
The concept of polarization also implies that the surface properties are altered in two directions. On the anode part of the capacitor it is oxidized, while on the cathode side it is reduced. The result is an arrangement of molecules that establishes a stable electric field. As a result, the capacitor can store and release charge, which is the working principle of the TAP155K025SRW.
