PMIC - Supervisors: TC32MEDB Application Field and Working Principle
PMIC or Power Management Integrated Circuit (PMIC) is a type of integrated circuit designed to monitor, manage and control the power delivery, power distribution, and power consumption of an electronic device, subsystem, or system. In particular, a PMIC featuring integrated supervisory functions is known as a supervisor IC. Supervisors are commonly used to detect and respond to abnormal conditions such as brownouts, overtemperature, shorts, and overvoltage. The TC32MEDB is a high-performance CMOS supervisor IC. It integrates and consolidates all of the key voltage detection and control functions required by today’s highly-integrated, power sensitive and low power microprocessors and microcontrollers.The TC32MEDB functions in unison with a device\'s power supply system as follows: -Integrated reset generator, triggered by an on-chip voltage detector, monitors the supply voltage. If the supply voltage drops below the reset-threshold voltage, the reset generator outputs a RESET signal to reset microprocessor and related logic circuits. -Undervoltage detector monitors supply voltage for brownout events. When the supply voltage drops below a preset threshold, the undervoltage signal (UV) is asserted to indicate that the microprocessor/microcontroller must be placed in a low-power state or shut off until the supply voltage is restored.-Overvoltage detector monitors supply voltage spikes and filters out noise so that the microprocessor is not adversely affected. If the supply voltage rises above a preset threshold, the overvoltage signal (OV) is asserted and the microprocessor/microcontroller must be placed in a low-power state or shut off. -Overtemperature detector monitors the temperature of the power supply system. When the temperature rises to a preset threshold, the overtemperature signal (OT) is asserted, indicating that the power supply should be shut off.The TC32MEDB also integrates an LED indicator for indicating reset/UV/OV/OT activity. Aside from these features, the TC32MEDB has a number of user-configurable features such as an adjustable detection voltage window and reset output active/inactive time. In practical applications, the TC32MEDB can be employed in a variety of scenarios, ranging from low power embedded applications to high power industrial and automotive applications. Providing advanced overvoltage and undervoltage protection, along with overtemperature shutdown, makes the TC32MEDB an excellent choice for protecting the power supply of microprocessors, DSPs, and microcontrollers. The TC32MEDB can also be used in applications requiring power sequencing, device power-up/down sequencing, and in applications demanding hot-plug capability. The TC32MEDB\'s superior performance and wealth of features make it an ideal device for a variety of applications, including automotive, industrial, home appliance, and consumer electronic applications.
