Data Acquisition - Analog Front End (AFE) is a technology used to detect, isolate, and monitor external voltage signals in an electrical circuit. The AFE is responsible for receiving, conditioning, and representing the signal data in a digital signal format for processing by a processor. One such AFE technology is TC500CPE (also known as Cowpea, for its technology acronym).

TC500CPE is an application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) developed by Emblaze Systems. It is designed to provide a high performance analog front end solution for medium-to-high capacity demanding industrial monitoring, security and control systems. The TC500CPE can provide decent signal conditioning and data integrity for a variety of analog signal sources, including thermocouples, thermistors, and strain gauges, as well as high speed Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) signals. The TC500CPE is capable of running up to 1 MHz of data transfer rate, which is suitable for applications involving rapid, continuous data transfer and fast response time. Further, the TC500CPE is designed to accommodate a wide range of Analog to Digital (ADC) interfaces, including a universal voltage reference, a 4-bit multi-bit multiplexer, an 8-bit biphasic driver to minimize error, and a 1-bit toggle switch.
