Optical sensors are electronic devices that use light and related measurements to detect objects, detect movement, and measure distance. They typically consist of a transmit and receive camera that detect the light reflection from objects in the environment and its changes. Photointerrupters, as a type of optical sensors, are commonly used to detect the presence of an object in a given area. Slot Type optical sensors, as the name implies, use slots in the center of the optical path instead of a conventional measured path. This type of optical sensor is commonly used in mid-range distances and possesses high stability and reliable performance. The Transistor Output type of slot type optical sensor implements an output transistor to control the output of the device, thereby providing high speed response and excellent reliability. The TCST5250 is a Transistor Output Slot Type optical sensor designed for general purpose optoelectronic applications.
The TCST5250 features a transmitter and receiver mounted in a single package, whereby the emitter side is designed for continuous operation while the detector side is protected against overloading and backwards current. This allows efficient and reliable operation in various applications. As a Transistor Output type of optical sensor, the TCST5250 is equipped with an output transistor that turns on when light is reflected to the receiver side. It can then control the output of the device, thus providing a fast response time and greater reliability than other types of optical sensors. Furthermore, the device is equipped with wave soldering and IR reflow compatible terminal leads, allowing for easy installation and compatibility with most standard SMT reflow soldering equipment.
In terms of application fields, the TCST5250 is suitable for various applications such as activating light curtains, detecting switches and slides, detecting jog and shuttle motion, and controlling of motor speed. The device has an operating voltage of between 5V and 18V, a modulation frequency of 0.5 kHz and up to 3.2 kHz, and a detection angle of up to 33°. The device is also capable of operating in temperatures between -40°C and +85°C, has a reliable time shock resistance of up to 20ms, and a time-out detection of 2000µs.
The principle of operation of the TCST5250 is based on the theory of reflection and refraction of light. When light reflects off an object, the light is refracted in the opposite direction, travelling back to the receiver side. When the receiver detects the incoming light, the output transistor is activated and a signal is sent to the rest of the system. In addition to activating the output transistor, the device can be configured to send off an output signal immediately when the light is reflected off the object, or send off a signal in alternating fashion, depending on the application requirements.
