PMIC (Power Management ICs) are components designed with the aim of managing the power consumption of an electronic device or system. Voltage regulators enable the consistent flow of current and voltage to various components and parts of a device or system, and special purpose voltage regulators are designed to cater to a specific purpose. Power supply systems face the challenge of managing both the level of input voltage and the load voltage. Working Principle of TDA21301
The TDA21301 voltage regulator uses two switches to control both the output voltage and current. When providing input voltage, the high-side MOSFET switch (named HS or HP in the diagram) turns on, and the output of the switch is applied to the inductor through a current sensing resistor. The inductor will begin to store energy and create a magnetic field, in order to increase the current to the output capacitor. The low-side MOSFET switch (LS or LP) is then turned on and off in order to regulate the voltage on the capacitor. The output current is sensed by a current sensing resistor and used to control the on/off cycle of the low-side MOSFET.
When controlling an adjustable power supply, the peak current mode of the TDA21301 can be used to manage the output voltage. This mode allows the user to adjust the peak value of the output voltage by varying the peak current setting of the voltage regulator. This peak current setting will then be compared to the sensed current value sensed by the current sensing resistor, and if the sensed value is greater then the peak setting, then the low-side MOSFET switch will be shut off for a short period of time in order to regulate the output voltage.
