Power Factor Correction (PFC) is a method used in power electronics that basically reduces the losses of a system and improves the efficiency of the overall system. This is achieved by knowing the continuous power law between voltages and frequencies, thus allowing the system to oscillate in a more efficient manner when a load is applied. The TDA4863-2 is a device designed for this purpose, providing a high-performance solution for efficient and precise power factor correction.The TDA4863-2 is based on an effective power factor control algorithm and a pulse width modulation (PWM) output stage. It is an integrated power management system with an internal 5V voltage regulator, ProtectFET (or PowerFET as an option), a comparator for overvoltage, ON/OFF and Run/Sleep control, a debug LED and a low power consumption mode. It is designed to reduce the total harmonic distortion (THD) and operates in both open loop and closed-loop modes.The PFC method used by the TDA4863-2 is based on a simple regulation loop containing a sensor, a controller and a power switch. The sensor measures the power factor of the power system and passes the information to the controller, which adjusts the power switch accordingly to maintain the desired power factor. In a power system, the power factor can be adjusted by either increasing or decreasing the conduction angle (the angle between the voltage and the current waveforms) of the power switch. The TDA4863-2 tackles this in an efficient manner by using pulse width modulation (PWM).Essentially, PWM works by the switching the power switch on and off in a pre-determined amount of time, adjusting the amount of time needed to maintain the desired power factor. By also incorporating control algorithms, the TDA4863-2 can provide a precise and stable power factor with minimal THD. This helps to reduce the cost of the system since the power supply power loss is reduced and the efficiency of the system is improved.The TDA4863-2 is targeted towards the industrial and commercial power factor correction (PFC) market and is suitable for applications such as motor drive systems, high power supply and uninterruptable power systems (UPS).
