TFS764HG Application field and Working Principle Introduction

PMIC – AC DC converters, offline switchers are becoming the most popular choice in providing the power levels and performance needed in today’s power applications. TFS764HG is developed by NXP to be an offline switcher solution for residential, commercial, power supply and motor drives applications. It is equipped with wide voltage range of 85-265 VAC, high efficiency up to 94%, and accurate voltage regulation (±1% at 230V). In combination with its high power factor and low standby power, TFS764HG is a perfect choice to power AC-DC power applications.

2. TFS764HG Key Advantages

TFS764HG provides lots of powerful features to power multiple applications. Firstly, it’s efficient and reliable due to its high-performance power factor correction and synchronous rectification stage with an average efficiency of virtually 94%. Secondly, it has superior thermal performance with maximum temperatures of 90℃ on the die and 80℃ in the package. It also provides an enhanced voltage accuracy of ±1% at 230VAC input of 300mVpp at the drain pin of the internal MOSFET.

3. TFS764HG Working Principle

The application circuit of TFS764HG is relatively simple, as it needs only a few external components for its system to start working. In the primary stage, a MOSFET is used to alternately draw current out of and feedback energy to the line. By switching the current in a certain pattern, power factor is improved and large currents during commutations are avoided. In the secondary stage, a low-cost forward converter is implemented in order to withstand large peak currents and regenerate energy from the output filter to the primary filter.Three modes are essentially involved in the operation of a TFS764HG. In burst-mode, the device draws a small amount of current from the line to provide power to its internal circuitry. In continuous-conduction power-factor-correction (CCPFC) mode, the voltage across the input filter is regulated by switching the MOSFET to a fixed frequency. Finally, in duty-cycle control mode, a fixed duty-ratio is used to regulate the output voltage.In conclusion, the TFS764HG is an ideal choice as an AC-DC power supply solution, as it provides highly efficient power factor correction and synchronous rectification, accurate voltage regulation, low noise and wide voltage range.
