Tantalum capacitors, also known as tantalum electrolytic capacitors, are polarized capacitors which are made using tantalum as an electrode with an oxide layer acting as the dielectric, and either a solid or liquid electrolyte as the other electrode. These capacitors are noted for their high capacitance-to-volume ratio, high stability, and high operating temperature range. A higher capacitance can be obtained by increasing either the area of the electrode or decreasing the dielectric thickness. Since the area of the electrodes is fixed, the size of the capacitor can be adjusted only by changing the dielectric thickness, which is typically done by using different types of anodizing processes. The resulting capacitance is typically in the range of 0.01 µF to 0.47 µF.
