The THS1215EVM board is an evaluation system designed for the TI, ADS1215 24-bit analog-to-digital converter. The ADS1215 is a precision, low-power, 24-bit ADC that is ideal for data acquisition applications which require high accuracy and low power consumption. The THS1215EVM was designed to simplify evaluation of the ADS1215 and facilitate the development of a user system. The board includes the ADS1215, voltage reference, and a 2.95 V ultra-low-noise reference in addition to jumper headers for connecting to input signals, analog-to-digital control & read lines, and power.
The ADS1215 is a 24-bit, low-power, delta-sigma ADC that provides outstanding performance for signal conditioning and data conversion applications which require high accuracy and low power. The ADS1215 contains four differential inputs, a programmable gain amplifier (PGA), an integrated oscillator, a 24-bit delta-sigma modulator, and an I2C-compatible serial interface. It operates from a single 2.7 V to 5.5 V supply, has a low-power standby mode, and consumes only 34 μA of current when active.
The THS1215EVM board is designed to operate with 5 V power supply and contains an integrated 2.95 V reference. The board provides four differential input headers (VIN1, VIN2, VIN3, and VIN4) for connecting input signal sources. It also includes a single-ended grounding point (VINCOM) for connecting the sources’ common ground points. The differential inputs are internally ac-coupled to remove any dc biases from the signals.
The increase in input frequency range allows for higher accuracy measurement of small signals, especially when the signal level is close to the noise floor. The PGA is used for scaling the input signal prior to the ADC. A jumper header (PGA_SEL_1/2) provides option for selecting between Two-channels and four-channel input mode. There are two jumpers (CH3DB_EN/CH4DB_EN) for enabling/disabling the 4th input channel.
The onboard oscillator frequency can be configured by using the onboard OSC_SEL jumper header. The THS1215EVM board also includes two LEDs (BYP_EN, RDY_EN) for monitoring the BYPASS_EN and RDY_EN signals from the ADC. The board contains multiple clock programming headers (CK_SEL1/CK_SEL2) which can be used to generate the internal clock from an external source.
The ADS1215 and supporting functions are communicated via the I2C compatible interface. The board includes an I2C header (SCL and SDA) which can be used to connect the board to external controller/processor. Once connected, the I2C interface can be used to read/write configuration registers and to initiate data conversion. The board also provides two SPI jumpers (SCLK and SDA) which can be used to connect an external SPI controller.
The THS1215EVM board is a comprehensive evaluation platform for evaluating the ADS1215 24-bit analog-to-digital converter. It is an ideal platform for testing the ADC’s performance in low-noise signal acquisition applications. The board allows for the selection of two and four channel input mode, variable PGA gain, external clock source, and SPI control.
