THS4281DR (dual) is a next generation, high performance and high precision instrumentation amplifiers from Texas Instruments, designed for use in test and measurement, industrial automation and process control applications.
Application Field
THS4281DR dual instrumentation amplifiers offer the best combination of superior performance, excellent DC precision and minimization of external components in applications such as transducer amplifier, data acquisition systems, industrial instrumentation, medical instrumentation, and differential/-summating amplifier configurations. They also offer high step-performance, high linearity and good slew rate.
It can be used in a wide range of applications including signal conditioning, signal amplification, data acquisition, medical instrumentation, instrumentation systems and instrumentation amplifier or transducer amplifier configurations. It has a wide range of features including low noise levels, high bandwidth, low input offset voltage, excellent CMRR, good high common-mode rejection and low distortion. Moreover, its low quiescent current makes it highly suitable for battery-powered applications.
Working Principle
THS4281DR Instrumentation Amplifier (IA) is a differential amplifier which operates in a closed loop configuration; that is, it senses the difference between the input signal (Vin1 and Vin2) and the output signal (Vout1 and Vout2), and adjusts its gain to maintain a constant output level. In normal operation, a certain amount of positive feedback exists, due to the fact that the part incorporates an operational amplifier (OP Amp). This ensures precise gain accuracy and excellent common mode rejection ratio (CMRR) over a wide range of operating conditions.
Using the “Normal” operating mode, one can adjust the gain of the instrumentation amplifier either by adjusting the external resistance values of the feedback path to the inverting input of the amplifier (R1, R2). This is possible because the gain of the instrumentation amplifier is equal to the ratio of the resistance of R2 and R1. If a higher gain is desired, then simply increase the value of R2 relative to R1.
The “Balanced” operating mode offers endless opportunities to adjust the gain and CMRR levels of the IA. This feature is particularly useful in systems where the CMRR needs to remain high. In Balanced mode, two IA circuits are cascaded with the inverting input of the first connected to the non-inverting input of the second. The two circuits vary in two ways: their quiescent current levels and the values of their feedback resistors. The resulting balanced differential configuration provides the same gain while maintaining CMRR levels of 120dB.
Overall, THS4281DR Instrumentation Amplifiers offer an excellent solution for a wide range of applications requiring low noise operation, excellent linearity and minimal external components. Its wide bandwidth, low input offset voltage, excellent common mode rejection and low distortion make it ideal for precision data acquisition systems, instrumentation and industrial automation applications.
