The TL3842D-8 is a discontinuous mode (DC to DC) switching voltage regulator that is designed to regulate the output voltage of the line-connected DC input power supply. In discontinuous mode, the output voltage can be regulated between a wide range of values without requiring a dedicated external resistor or transformer. The TL3842D-8 is available in two versions, 8-pin and 8-pin with thermal pad. It is typically used in applications that require low power consumption and high efficiency like battery-powered appliances, consumer electronics, telecommunications, instrumentation and control systems.
The TL3842D-8 is a single-control, fast-mode self-oscillation switching voltage regulator. It incorporates a voltage reference and a current-mode PWM controller. The output voltage is determined by a resistive divider which is connected between the output and the reference pins. The voltage reference is a precision 0.5V reference connected between the reference pin and the ground terminal. A feedback signal is applied to the voltage error amplifier which compares it to the 0.5V reference level on the reference pin. When the output voltage becomes higher than the 0.5V reference voltage, the charge pump bias transistor is switched on, allowing the output voltage to increase. Similarly, when the output voltage drops below the reference voltage, then the charge pump bias transistor is switched off and the output voltage decreases.
The controller takes care of the current sensing and the switching control, thus ensuring a high-frequency modulation of the input current. The current in the load is continuously monitored to maintain the desired output voltage and to ensure its stability. The TL3842D-8 controller also features an adjustable soft start to reduce inrush current at the startup and other protection features like under/over voltage protection and over-temperature protection which help prevent damages caused by extreme operating conditions.
The TL3842D-8 is well suited for applications where high efficiency and low power consumption are required. It is capable of providing a highly regulated output voltage over a wide range of operating conditions. It also incorporates a flexible soft start circuit that provides a controlled turn-on of the regulator. The built-in protection circuit reduces the possibility of damage due to overloads or voltage dropouts. The controller is also designed to further reduce power consumption when the load is light and to provide an adequate supply current for higher load conditions. The TL3842D-8 is available in an 8-pin DIP package and is also available with a thermal pad for improved heat dissipation.
