The TL712CPWRE4 is a linear-comparator device that is used to compare input voltages. In essence, it is an operational amplifier (op-amp) with three-terminal output comparators. The TL712CPWRE4 is capable of providing low input offset voltage, high common-mode rejection ratio (CMRR) and low drift over temperature. Its robust architecture and low power consumption makes it suitable for many applications.

The TL712CPWRE4 can be used to compare input voltages that are either unipolar or bipolar. When attempting to compare two unipolar voltages, the TL712CPWRE4 will output a voltage in one of two states. If the input voltages are equal, the output of the comparator will be in a high-impedance state (i.e., it will be open-circuit). If the input voltages are unequal, the output of the comparator will be a logic ‘1’ (i.e., it will be a ‘closed-circuit’). When attempting to compare two bipolar voltages, the TL712CPWRE4 will output a voltage in one of three different states. If the input voltages are equal, the output of the comparator will be in a high-impedance state (i.e., it will be open-circuit). If the first input voltage is greater than the second input voltage, the output of the comparator will be a logic ‘1’ (i.e., it will be a ‘closed-circuit’). Finally, if the first input voltage is less than the second input voltage, the output of the comparator will be a logic ‘0’ (i.e., it will be a ‘high-impedance’). This feature is particularly useful for applications that require the output of the comparator to be dependent on the magnitude of the two input voltages.

The TL712CPWRE4 differs from most op-amps as its output signal is not limited by the amplifier’s open-loop voltage gain. This allows the output of the comparator to retain its logic level even in the presence of minimal input offsets and large common-mode input voltages (up to the maximum ratings). Also, the large common-mode input voltage range of the TL712CPWRE4 means that it can be used to compare input voltages that are greater than its power supply voltage (which is usually the case for many practical applications).

One of the most commonly used applications of the TL712CPWRE4 is as a window comparator. In this type of circuit, one input voltage is compared to the voltage range set by two separate reference voltages (i.e., lower and upper thresholds). If the input voltage is between the two thresholds, the output of the comparator will be a logic ‘1’. If the input voltage is outside the threshold, the output of the comparator will be a logic ‘0’. This type of circuit is often used in sensors, monitoring systems and circuits that require limits to be set.

Another popular application of the TL712CPWRE4 is in switched capacitor filters. When two or more capacitors are connected in parallel, an input signal will cause the voltages across the capacitors to become increasingly unbalanced. The TL712CPWRE4 can be used to detect these differences in voltage and act as an input switch that allows the charge to discharge. This type of filter provides a low-pass response, whose corner frequency is determined by the capacitance values of the capacitors.
