Description of Working Principle

The TL7660CDG4 works on a Buck Converter configuration with an adjustable current limit and power saving mode. The Buck Converter is a switched-mode power supply that converts an input voltage and current into an output voltage and current. In the TL7660CDG4, the internal Buck Regulator is composed of a power MOSFET, integrated current sense resistor, voltage and current loop compensation, current limit, and power saving mode, to provide a highly efficient, low noise and low dropout regulated DC supply. The input voltage is connected to the source terminal, while the output voltage is connected to the drain terminal of the power MOSFET, and the regulated current is applied to the output load.The operation of the device is based on the voltage regulator loop, which provides the necessary feedback to control the output voltage. The feedback signal is the difference between the output voltage and the reference voltage. The feedback signal is compared to an internal reference voltage, and the error output is given to an error amplifier, which controls the gate of the power MOSFET, thus controlling the output voltage.The power MOSFET is turned on and off by the switching signal from the error amplifier, such that the average power delivered to the load is equal to the input voltage multiplied by the current limit. The switching frequency is regulated by the frequency setting pin. The internal current limit not only helps the device to maintain a low dropout regulator but also protects the load from extreme currents or short circuit.

Power Saving Mode

The TL7660CDG4 operates in either PWM and PFM mode, depending on the load conditions. In PWM mode, the device operates with high efficiency, low noise, and low output ripple and is suitable for applications requiring high average output current and an average output power of more than 500mA. In PFM mode, the device increases its efficiency by reducing the switching frequency at light load conditions while still providing constant output voltage.The power savings mode of the TL7660CDG4 helps further reduce the power consumption and helps further improve the efficiency. The power savings mode is activated when the load current is below the current limit setting and the ripple voltage of the output is below a set level. When the power savings mode is enabled, the power MOSFET is turned off and the output voltage is monitored. When the output voltage rises above the set level, the power MOSFET is turned on again to provide the output current.
