TL7759CDR Application Field and Working Principle

The TL7759CDR is a type of Peripheral Monitor IC (PMIC) which falls under the category of Supervisors. It is a fully-featured power supervisor which provides some of the best in class features in voltage monitoring and protection. This thoroughly integrated device has an array of peripheral system monitoring and protection components that provide better system reliability.

The TL7759CDR eliminates the need for multiple stand-alone voltage monitoring and protection devices. It contains input voltage monitors, programmable trip points and field-progammable Brown-out Detectors (BODs) which offer higher performance and flexibility. The integrated watchdog timer also works toward preventing system lockups as well as Brown-out problems. The feature which stands out the most among all its other features is the presence of precision voltage monitor which helps keep system in clock-and-stay alive operation.

It comes in 6 package options which includes VSSOP (Extended Termperature), VSSOP, SO-8 (Extended Temperature), SO-8, PDIP (Extended Temperature) and PDIP. Furthermore, it also has its supply voltage between the range of 2.5V up to 5V and an operating temperature range of -40°C up to +125°C.

The working principle of TL7759CDR is quite simple. The device thereby monitors one output voltage and provides supervisory capabilities for up to 8 other output transitions, and also provides reset glue logic. The output voltage for monitoring is connected to the ON/OFF pin. The monitoring status on ON/OFF pin is compared against voltage present in the VIDx and VID0 pins, after passing through a voltage divider array, these pins provide a high accuracy output such as 1.5x, 2.0x, 2.5x and 3.3x over the supply voltage itself. The Voltage Monitor and reset sense are programmable with External R/C Network.

TL7759CDR has a slew-rate limited output which helps minimize input thought noise and inrush currents and replace wrong or undesired control signals. It can also detect the transition from logic low to logic high and vice-versa on the ON/OFF pin. When the ON/OFF pin is asserted logic high, ON/OFF status is compared with the monitor voltage.

The undervoltage condition of the monitored voltage is indicated by the UV pin going low. The RESET pin goes low when any one of the fault detector outputs goes low. The device is powered by the VDD pin. The REFOUT provides an adjustable voltage reference, which can be adjusted with a resistor when necessary. The EN/UV pin is used to Monitor the VDD pin and set a reset assertion while the VDD pin drops below a preset threshold.

The selector pin is used to select between the dynamic and static reset conditions. The dynamic reset condition is activated when the selector pin is at logic high and the RESET pin is asserted low immediately after the fault occurrence. The static reset Keeps the RESET pin in low state, until the selector pin is reset to logic low. The delay pin is for setting the reset oneshot pulse width.
