The device allows for the generation of multiple, low-jitter clocks from a low-cost reference oscillator, such as a crystal or a ceramic resonator. This eliminates the need for multiple high-cost clock sources in the application.The device also allows for the generation of multiple frequencies from a single reference frequency. This eliminates the need for multiple crystal oscillators in the application. Furthermore, the device allows for multiple clock domains to be synchronously crossed without the risk of metastability.The device utilizes a Phase locked loop, which is a type of feedback control system that generates an output signal with the same phase as the input signal. The PLL has a phase detector that compares the phase of the input signal with the output signal, and a loop filter that smoothes out the output of the phase detector. Based on this, the VCO control voltage is generated and fed to the voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO).
