Analog-to-digital converters (ADC) are a crucial device when moving data from the analog world to the digital one. The TLC3574IPW is a stand-alone, 12-bit parallel A/D converter that uses successive approximation register (SAR) conversion technology. It offers 1 μs throughput time, low power consumption and excellent performance.

The TLC3574IPW is ideal for applications where a 12-bit resolution is required, but with minimal power consumption in mind. Typical applications include battery or solar-powered products, portable devices, handhelds, and multimedia terminals (cell phones, PDAs, digital cameras, camcorders).

The TLC3574IPW features a power saving design with a low quiescent current of 15 mA (typical). The TLC3574IPW features a 12-bit successive approximation register (SAR) type of analog-to-digital conversion. This SAR conversion is used to convert an analog input signal to a digital value. This is done by iteratively adjusting bits in a digital to analog converter (DAC) until it matches the analog input signal. The SAR is performed in three stages: the data acquisition stage, the converter stage and the result stage.

In the data acquisition stage the input signal is sampled and then the portion of the ADC which enables the converter to compare the digital output to the analog input is enabled. In the converter stage the binary value is converted to an analog voltage. This voltage is compared with the analog input signal, and the differences are noted.In the result stage, the binary bits are adjusted based on the difference noted in the converter stage. This process is repeated until the differences are negligible. At this point, the SAR has converged to the best-approximation solution.

The TLC3574IPW offers excellent performance for a 12-bit SAR with an integral nonlinearity of ±1 LSB, differential nonlinearity of ±2 LSB, and a maximum total unadjusted error of ±4.5 LSB. Furthermore, it features an offset error of ±1 LSB and a gain error of ±1 LSB.

The TLC3574IPW also offers a variety of useful features. It has a wide supply voltage range (2.7 V – 6 V), allowing it to be operated with any type of supply voltage.
