Introduction to TLC545CN

The TLC545CN is a low-cost, low-power, 8-bit successive approximation register (SAR) Analog To Digital Converter (ADC). It is designed for applications where accuracy, low power consumption and small package size are the primary concerns. Special design techniques and dynamic element matching provide excellent linearity and low-drift performance. The device operates from a single supply voltage, either 2.7V to 5.5V or 4V to 10V. It is a single-supply, CMOS/TTL-compatible, low-power, low-cost ADC with a 65dB (65535:1) input dynamic range and 8-bit resolution. It is fully static, requiring no adjustments for operation, and no external components for normal operation.The TLC545CN has an internal noise-filtering capacitor which can be switched on to stabilize the input signal, reducing the effects of high-frequency noise. This capacitor is factory-stored and can be switched in or out by the user. The device has an internal 2.56V reference and a temperature sensor to provide fault monitoring of the device. The TLC545CN also features an 8-bit data register and a serial link to reduce clock frequency and I/O requirements.

Working Principle of TLC545CN

The TLC545CN is an 8-bit SAR A/D converter that can convert analog input signals into digital values. It operates from a single supply voltage from 2.7V to 5.5V or 4V to 10V. A 2.56V reference voltage is provided on-chip and can be externally adjusted if required.The TLC545CN operates on the principle of successive approximation. It uses a feedback loop where an analog voltage is compared to an internal reference voltage. The initial input voltage is first compared to the reference voltage. A binary code is generated each time the comparison is made. The code is then stored in a register and updated each comparison cycle. In the first cycle, a binary code of eight bits is used, which is decoded and stored in the internal register. Further comparison cycles are carried out until the exact value of the input voltage is obtained. Finally, the 8-bit code from the register is released on the data output. The input voltage range is divided into 256 steps within the range of the full-scale output. The binary code generated for each of these steps is stored in a lookup table so that the digital output can be easily read.
