TLD1211SJFUMA1 from TI (Texas Instruments Inc) is a control chip that helps in driving power LEDs. This chip is a constant current driver with a step-up (boost) converter to achieve high brightness for the LEDs. TLD1211SJFUMA1 is designed for LED backlighting for LCD display and general LED lighting applications. It is suitable for LED TV backlighting, LED lamp, LED lighting modules and modules applications, etc. This LED driver is also suitable for various AC/DC adapter, battery-powered and other LED illuminating applications. It can work with other types of low current LED strings up to 24V, such as infrared LEDs, UV LEDs and white LEDs.
Working Principle of TLD1211SJFUMA1
TLD1211SJFUMA1 can provide a constant current to a string of connected LEDs. To achieve this, the device employs a step-up (boost) converter with integrated P-Channel MOSFET and an adjustable current sink. The boost converter works on the principle of ‘flyback’ converter and is usually used in offline LED lighting applications.
The device consists of control, switch and rectifier blocks. The flyback input voltage is stepped up to the internal voltage (VIN) level required for the internal linear current sink to regulate the desired output current. The internal linear feedback works on error signal generated from the sensed current and drives the P-Channel MOSFET. Connected to the primary winding is the internal P-channel MOSFET which will switch when the sensing block reaches the programmed current level.
The P-channel MOSFET is charge-filled during the off-time of the switching cycle and is completely discharged with time during on-time of the switching cycle. This results in current through the LEDs. The current is sensed across the sense resistor and regulated with PWM (pulse-width modulation). The external resistor R1 is used to adjust the LED current.
Once the output voltage reaches a certain level, the LED current will start to flow like a fixed step-down converter, where LED current is regulated by the internal linear feedback. This principle of operation ensures constant current regardless of the load and input voltage variations.
