Linear voltage regulators (LVRs) are voltage control devices that supply power to a device by converting an input voltage to a voltage range that is suitable for the device. The TLE42664G is a linear voltage regulator with excellent power handling capabilities and compatibility with other voltage regulation products from Texas Instruments. It is designed to regulate either a regulated 3.3V or 5V output from a unregulated, line-connected source. This makes the TLE42664G ideal for use in applications requiring both high-current and multiple voltage outputs, such as in consumer electronics and other portable devices.

The TLE42664G LVR is a dual-output, 180 mA/2A adjustable linear regulator that can be configured with an output voltage of 3.3V or 5V. It is designed to work with a line-connected source (input voltage range of 4.5V̆25V). It also features an internal high-input voltage spike protection and a maximum input current limit of 2A, allowing for flexibility when controlling current draw from the input source. Additionally, the TLE42664G comes with an Enable/Disable option, which when inactive, sets the regulator current limit to 0mA, allowing for a low system standby current.

The TLE42664G’s working principle is that of a conventional linear regulator. In simple terms, it takes an input voltage, sets a reference voltage, and then compares it to a control voltage. If the control voltage is greater than the reference voltage, the output of the regulator is turned off, thus limiting current draw from the input. If the control voltage is less than the reference voltage, then the output is activated, thereby allowing current to flow. This type of regulator behavior is commonly known as a “load-line regulation”, in which the linear regulator is configured to maintain a constant output voltage while varying inputs.

It includes a wide input voltage range, current limiting, multiple operating modes (including enable/disable and sleep modes), fast response time, thermally-efficient power handling, and an on-board temperature compensation circuit.
